How to read car tire information?

Car tires are considered one of the most important parts of the car, as they are responsible for the car’s grip on the road and providing control. Therefore, it is important to be aware of the information on your car’s tires, so that you can choose the right tires for them, and keep them in good condition.

Basic information about the car’s tires is located on the sidewall of the tire or on the passenger door (Autopro recommends using this method), and is written in numbers and letters. The following is an explanation of the meaning of this information:

  • The first letter (P): indicates that the tire is used in small passenger vehicles, small commercial vehicles, and four-wheel drive vehicles.
  • Width (B): The first number indicates the width of the tire in millimeters. For example, the number 215 means that the tire width is 215 mm.
  • Aspect Ratio: (C) The second number indicates the aspect ratio of the tire, which is expressed as a percentage of the width. For example, a number of 65 means that the sidewall height is 65% of the width.
  • Type of construction (D): The third letter indicates the type of internal construction of the tire. The letter “R” is typically used for radial tires and “D” is used for bias-ply tires.
  • Rim diameter (E): The fourth number indicates the diameter of the rim in inches. For example, the number 15 means the rim diameter is 15 inches.
  • Load Index (F): The fifth number indicates the maximum load that the tire can bear. For example, the number 91 means that the tire can handle a maximum load of 615 kg.
  • Speed rating: (G) The sixth letter indicates the maximum speed rate that the tire can handle. For example, the letter “H” means that the tire can withstand speeds of up to 210 km/h.

In addition to the basic information mentioned above, other information may be found on your vehicle’s tires, such as:

  • Date of manufacture: The two numbers indicate the week and year in which the tire was manufactured. For example, the picture above shows that the tire was manufactured in the 40th week of 2020.
  • Brand and type: These two numbers indicate the specific brand and type of tire.
  • Manufacture country code: This code indicates the country in which the tire was manufactured.

It is important to check the information on your tires regularly, to make sure they are in good condition and have not exceeded its designed service life. Your car’s tires must be replaced every three years or 60,000 kilometers, whichever comes first.

Here are some tips to keep your car tires in good condition:

  • Maintain tire pressure at the level recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
  • Avoid driving on cracked or dilapidated roads.
